new work from Monhegan Island

Monhegan

A July trip to Monhegan Island yielded two watercolor sketches and a strong collection of reference images for a new body of work. The island had been on my wish list for decades, and this visit has already shaped a new series of acrylic paintings inspired by its coast, light, and atmosphere.

With limited Plein Air time, I recorded as many scenes as I could. The Ferry ride around the Island afforded some views few folks get to capture. Sun fish, harbor seals and all sorts of birds paid us a visit.

The day was absolutely gorgeous, sunny and calm. I missed some of the moody weather, crashing waves and lighting that I have seen in many Monhegan paintings. But the brightness of the July sun enhanced the Island’s natural colors to the surreal.

Lobster Cove — Angles and Wrecks and Inspiration

First Visit

With only a mere 3 hours on the Island, I had to capture as much as I could in a short period of time. I did a little research and knew that Lobster Cove would be my focus given the distance back to the Ferry.

The Cove is home to the D.T. Sheridan Shipwreck on one side, and if you turn 180° you’ll view the Kent/Wyeth home and studio behind you. With a deep breath I chose my point of view and painted 2 watercolors. (See my Watercolors Section). This view intrigued me the most even with the mid day sun at a direct right angle.

An Island Landmark

I know this house has a wonderful artistic and island history. Us newbie artists to Monhegan get to view  it pretty quickly after a short walk up “Main Street”. I have seen numerous photos and paintings of it.

For me, I was immediately attracted to the lines and shadows. I also love the way the surrounding landscape seems to hug it in an island embrace.

As an architect, I also appreciate the classic New England proportions. The treat was catching the gull on the chimney, waiting for me.
